amalia caputo

Amalia Caputo, 1964.

Bachelor in Art and Art History from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, MFA in Studio Art/ Photography at New York University and the International Center of Photography.

Caputo has devoted to her career as a photo and video based artist, dealing with multiple subjects regarding mostly the body as the core of her work. She concentrates into exploring in depth the medium itself, along with the presence of the corporeal or its absence, in ways that it can be related to a variety of concepts such as time, art history, memory, narrative, theatricality, and ultimately, as an archive of ideas.

Her thoughts about photography convey it’s duality, being both, a narrative or a non-narrative tool, always as an intermediate between the thought and the action of clicking, and registering/choosing a specific frame, such as one could say that the paintbrush is the extension of the brain for a painter, or the pen for the writer.

In her most recent photo and videos, she has addressed the concerns of art history, memory, cultural icons, domesticity and the obsessive/compulsive as a stigma of our times.

Since 1989 Amalia Caputo has exhibited widely in museums and galleries in her native Caracas, also in Barcelona, Miami, London, Mexico, New York, Taipei, DC, to name a few. In 2006 she showcased a solo exhibition "Fe, Cuerpo y Artificio", curated by Costanza De Rogatis, at the Museo Alejandro Otero in Caracas and Museo de Arte Acarigua Araure, in Venezuela. In 2010 had a solo exhibition "Tableaux" at Dot Fifty One Gallery, in Miami.

She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Her work is represented in various public and private collections including those of the Galeria de Arte Nacional in Caracas Venezuela, the Fundación Banco Mercantil Collection in Caracas, Museum of Latin American Art - Molaa, in LA, and the Ella Fontanals Cisneros Collection and the Arturo and Liza Mosquera in Miami, among others.

Lives and works in Miami, Florida, since August 2003.
